Department of Hematology & Transfusion Medicine Unit

OUR HISTORY

Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (previously known as Blood Bank), started operation on the 1st August 1983, providing diagnostic, therapeutic, research and teaching services.
 
In line with the objective of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to make USM as the centre of references and research of experts from inside and outside of the country, both units are constantly assessing and developing new services highly related in the field of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine.
 
Officially started full operation on the 16th January 1984 with 13 staff, led by a Medical Officer. On the 22 January, 1984, Blood Bank Laboratory (Immunohaematology Laboratory) started providing test related to blood transfused to patients and providing Blood Components for blood transfusion purpose. In line with the development of Transfusion Medicine, Blood Transfusion Unit not only providing safe blood transfusion, but also providing therapeutical services. Thus, Blood Bank Unit has changed its name into Transfusion Medicine Unit on the 1st June 2003.
 
Now, Hematology Department is under the administration od School of Medical Science (PPSP), while Transfusion Medicine is under the administration of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), which is headed and coordinated by the same Head of Department.
