Department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine Unit provides medical laboratory services for Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (Hospital USM), and also committed in teaching and learning programs for undergraduate & postgraduate students and research initiatives. We are a dynamic department with ambitious goals and a talented, committed staff. We work hard each day to fulfill our vital responsibility to support the delivery of quality laboratory and safe blood transfusion on services to the Hospital USM. Going forward, we will continue to use our resources as effectively as possible while finding opportunities to improve laboratory services, teaching & learning delivery system and research activity at our greatest state.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of diagnostic tests and safe transfusion medicine services for patients’ health care, to develop and expand our basic and translational research outputs and fostering the highest level of knowledge among our students. The services offered includes of routine hematology, coagulation and blood transfusion, as well as highly specialized tests including hemolytic work-up, thalassemia diagnosis, leukemia/lymphoma phenotyping, molecular study, stem cell services and special coagulation investigation for bleeding and thrombotic disorders. The tests that we offered is assured with an external quality assessment program which are regularly reviewed. 

We are accreditated with the standards of MS ISO 15189 for the medical laboratory services since 2007 as well as MS ISO 9001: 2008 accreditation from SIRIM. Hence, our management and services complies with the quality requirements of routine and specialized diagnostic tests, blood donation and transfusion management as well as molecular and stem cell laboratory services. We serve to Hospital USM and received test requests and clinical consultations from other medical institutions all over the country.

Master of Pathology (M.Path Haematology) program is under the Conjoint Board of College of Pathology, Malaysia. We offer postgraduate training for this country in the field of Hematology and Transfusion specialty. Graduated as hematologists, they will be able to manage haematology laboratory and transfusion medicine laboratory, consultative capability on hematology/coagulation and immuno-hematological cases as well as experienced in conducting research to improve or expand the hematological services in their future career. Our M.Path program is also certified with MS ISO 9001:2008 for quality in teaching and learning. We are continued to nurture students who are brilliant and up to now 50 students have been graduated from this program including four international students. We are also accredited for postgraduate teaching by Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) and one of the centers allocated in Malaysia for Haematology training.  

The department while committed in the postgraduate medical program is also moving with the university’s goal to increase Masters and Ph.D holders. We have produced a significant number of students with Ph.D and Masters of Science with their projects related to Haematology and Blood Transfusion specialty. The academic staffs are also active and committed in the research activities including publication in journals and books. They have acquired many grants ranging from basic to advanced projects as primary investigators or as co-researchers. All the academic staffs hold research grants and contributed to the research development in the department. 

As we face with new challenge in the years ahead, we are optimistic with the future of this department. We hope to go forward and evolve steadily in all aspects of haematology and blood transfusion. Please browse through our website and get to know us.
